Build an E-Learning Website with LifterLMS in 5 Easy Steps
Thinking of creating an online course website? If you have valuable skills that other people can benefit from, this could be a great idea. And the best part is that it’s easy to get started.
You can easily create a beautiful, fully functional online course website using WordPress. The process is simple whether you are a complete beginner or a more seasoned pro. You can have an online course website up and running in just a few hours, using the LifterLMS plugin.
Why use LifterLMS for your online course website?
LifterLMS is a WordPress Learning Management System (LMS) plugin with over 10,000 active installs. The plugin is available in a free version with many features and several paid integrations are available.
However, you can create a fully functional online course website without having to use any of these extensions. With LifterLMS, you can configure courses, set prerequisites, and add quizzes alongside several other features.
These features aren’t necessarily unique to LifterLMS, but here’s how they stand out:
1. Lots of features in the free plan
Unlike some comparable LMS plugins, the main LifterLMS plugin is completely free to download from the WordPress plugin repository. The free plugin comfortably rivals most premium LMS plugins, and you’re unlikely to need to use a paid extension in most cases.
If you are starting your online course website, pairing LifterLMS with one of the best free WordPress themes is a great idea.
LifterLMS paid extensions include features like PayPal integration, advanced quizzes, and social learning.
2. No need for additional plugins
Another advantage of LifterLMS being so well equipped is that you don’t need to install any additional plugins. The plugin is pretty much a complete solution. If you need additional functionality, there are a host of paid LifterLMS integrations that will work seamlessly.
In contrast, many other LMSs require you to install additional plugins to provide certain functionality. For example, you might need to pair an LMS plugin with a membership plugin to give your users a full e-learning experience.
In theory, there is nothing wrong with this approach. WordPress plugins and themes must meet standards that make them compatible. In practice, however, plugin conflicts do occur and can be frustrating to resolve.
3. Easy to expand
LifterLMS on its own is a pretty capable LMS, and there is a rich collection of native LifterLMS integrations to extend your website. But that’s not all. You have even more options as the plugin integrates well with over 1,500 other apps offered in the Zapier plugin directory.
How to configure Lifter LMS
You will need a WordPress installation or a hosting plan that supports one. If not, choosing the best quality hosting service is the place to start.
And while you can combine LifterLMS with most WordPress themes, keep it simple by using one of the best multipurpose WordPress themes.
Once you’ve cleared those basics, follow these steps.
Step 1: Install the Lifter LMS plugin
In your WordPress dashboard, click plugins > Add new. This will take you to the WordPress plugins directory. Once here, search LifterLMS.
Go ahead, install it and activate it once it appears. Once you activate the plugin, it will launch the setup wizard. There’s not much to configure, so follow the process and you’ll soon be ready to start.
In your WordPress dashboard, you will now see three new tabs. These are LifterLMSwhich takes you to the LifterLMS dashboard and two other tabs: Course and Memberships.
To get started in earnest, you’ll need to create your first course.
Step 2: Create a new course
In your WordPress dashboard, click Course, just below the LifterLMS tab. Give your new course a name to get started. Next, you’ll create sections and lessons tailored to your program.
Step 3: Create sections and lessons
Click on Launch course builder in the right menu. If you are creating a complex course with many topics and subtopics, you can create sections with a group of related lessons in each.
Alternatively, you can simply create a series of lessons if that better suits your needs. Whichever you choose, you’ll find the options in the menu on the right side of the page as above.
And here’s one of the great things about using LifterLMS: you can drag and drop items (sections and lessons) for easy organization.
Once you have defined the skeleton of your course, you will naturally want to add course content.
Step 4: Add content to your lessons
Your online course site is taking shape! All you have to do is add the most important thing: the content of your course.
You can add course content in the format of your choice, from text to audio, images or video. Or all of the above.
Back in your WordPress dashboard, hover over Course then click Course to see all the lessons you just created. To add content to a lesson, open it and add your content as you would any other WordPress content.
If you’re using video, it’s best to host it externally, perhaps on YouTube. You can then make the video content available as an embed.
Step 5: Configure access settings
Will it be a paid or free course? You will need to configure the access settings for your courses. You can do this in the course builder.
Open the course you want to edit. Scroll down to the section titled Access packages. Click on Add new to expand this tab and display all options. Configure these details as appropriate, and that’s it.
At this point, you will have a fully functional online course website.
